Definition
The term "pragmatic" refers to people who are intelligent and practical. People who are pragmatic concentrate on what works in the real-world and don't get bogged by theological concepts that are unrealistic.
The word pragmatic comes from Latin praegere, meaning "to grasp hold of." Pragmatism is a philosophy that sees the world as inseparable from agency within it. William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a new term for old methods of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New Name for Old Methods of Thinking" was an answer to this. He began by describing the 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly intractable conflict between two ways of thinking, the empiricist with a tough-minded belief in the experience of things and going by the facts, and the tender-minded tendency to a priori principles that appeal to rationalization. He also defined "praxy" as a concept of truth that is rooted in the actual world, not an abstract idealized theory or philosophy. He argued that pragmatism was the most logical and honest approach to human issues, and that all other philosophical approaches were flawed in one way or other.
During the 1900s, other philosophers also developed pragmatist perspectives that included George Herbert Mead, W.E.B Du Bois, and Alain Locke. They developed pragmatic views of the structure of science, education, and public policy. John Dewey articulated pragmatist views in areas like education democratic, democracy, and public policy.
Today, pragmatism continues influencing the design of curriculums, educational programs and other applications of science and technology. In addition, there are a variety of pragmatic philosophical movements, like classical pragmatism and neopragmatism.
